ABOUT

The Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow is a traditional powwow meant to enrich the lives of all people, educate the general public, honor the elders, children, and veterans. The planning for this yearly event began in 2000 by a small group of dedicated folks who felt a need for an intertribal gathering in Interior Alaska. In addition to the Native people, including the Athabascan, Inuiaq, Yupik, Tlingit, Haida, Aleut, & Tsimshian: Alaska is home to a wide variety of transplanted Natives people originating throughout Turtle Island (U. S., Canada, and Mexico). This gathering was needed to keep all traditions alive and to recharge the spirits of all the people involved and continues to do so after 17 years.

Permission to hold this powwow was requested and granted from the Traditional Chief of the Athabascan people at that time. The late Chief Peter John of Minto, gave his blessing to the group and the 1st Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow was born in the summer of 2001.

Subsequent Athabascan leaders (traditional 1st Chiefs): the Reverend Chief David Salmon of Chalkyitsik, and current Chief Don Honea Sr. of Ruby, have followed in this tradition of granting their permission to hold this annual gathering on Athabascan lands as to heal the commnity and continue to share our cultural traditions. We are thankful of their support and are very honored to be able to bring to this community the Annual Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow
